Sangre azul // Blue blood

It's common to hear the current Spanish nobility that blue blood was invented in Iberian kingdoms in IX century. Aristocracy created this concept to differentiate themselves from the rest of the population and to demonstrate their Christian and Visigothic lineage.

In a white thin skin, veins are marked with a blue colour. The skin pallor in the arm which held the weapon denoted that privileged didn't do any physical work as peasants and artisans. Although, it was a Christian purity test because it showed that they had anything to do with Moors and Jews, in the middle of the Reconquista.

This argument was assimilated by all of the European kingdoms and is the cause of the blue princes (brave or charming princes, in the English culture) of the fairy tales, even though their blood is as red as another human beings.
