El capitán Domingo de Toral y Valdés fue un Odiseo moderno. Sirvió en Flandes y recaló en Goa, al servicio del virrey de las Indias Orientales, Miguel de Noronha. Desde allí realizó misiones, como el reconocimiento del estrecho de Ormuz y la reconquista del fuerte de Mombasa. Tras enemistarse con el virrey, que llegó a encarcelarlo, huyó a España.
Recorrió el desierto de Persia, fue encarcelado en Alepo y rescatado por un rabino aficionado a Lope de Vega, sufrió una tempestad entre Malta y Creta, y fue víctima de un ataque corsario en La Goleta. Pasó por Cerdeña, Marsella y Barcelona. Finalmente, llegó a Madrid y habló con el rey, defendiéndose de las calumnias del virrey. Pudo jubilarse y escribir esta relación, que concluyó en 1635.

The captain Domingo de Toral y Valdés was a modern Odysseus. He served in Flanders and ended up at Goa, at the service of the viceroy of the Eastern India, Miguel de Noronha. From there Toral carried out many missions. For example, the reconnaissance of the strait of Hormuz or the reconquest of the fortress of Mombasa. He fell out with the viceroy, who imprisoned him, and escaped from India.
