Hoy es San Juan y voy a escribir sobre uno de los espacios más enigmáticos de toda Castilla: la ermita de San Bartolomé, en pleno cañón del río Lobos, en la provincia de Soria.
Existen dudas sobre su origen. El papa Alejandro III citó un convento templario dedicado a San Juan de Otero en 1170 que pudo o no estar en esta ubicación. El lugar era tan recóndito y estratégico que se convirtió en lugar de peregrinaje para estos monjes guerreros. El templo actual es posterior, aunque aún se conservan ruinas de una construcción de esa época.
Su leyenda proviene de su ubicación, uno de los centros mágicos de la península y parada en uno de los caminos a Compostela. Es equidistante entre los dos puntos más septentrionales de la geografía peninsular: el cabo de Creus y Finisterre. Es un ónfalo, un centro del mundo. Según la tradición, el apóstol Santiago, montado en su caballo, saltó desde lo alto de uno de los farallones del cañón. Dependiendo de la versión, su espada cayó al suelo y quedó clavada en el lugar donde luego se edificó el templo o fueron los cascos de su caballo los que marcaron el lugar al caer.
En su interior, la orden celebraba ritos iniciáticos, tal y como puede deducirse de las manifestaciones simbólicas en piedra de todo el templo. Entre otros muchos: el lobo (grado iniciático en las cofradías medievales de canteros y símbolo de la luz para la tradición griega), San Bartolomé con su piel en las manos (en referencia a la serpiente que muda la piel como metáfora del conocimiento), los pentáculos invertidos formados con corazones (referencias sufistas y alquímicas traídas de Tierra Santa), el crismón de los 'mil caminos a Santiago', la pata de oca (de la cofradía de constructores 'Hijos del Maestro Jacques') o el pulpo (relacionado astrológicamente con el solsticio de verano).

Today is Saint John's Eve and I'm going to write about one of the most enigmatic places of the whole Castile: the hermitage of Saint Bartholomew, in the middle of the canyon of the river Lobos, in the province of Soria.
There are some doubts about its origin. The pope Alexander III wrote about a templar convent dedicated to Saint John of Otero in 1170 that could be or not in this place. The location was so hidden and strategic that became a site of pilgrimage for this warrior monks. The current temple was built later than this one, although it keeps some ruins of this period.
Its legend comes from its location, one of the magic centres of de Iberian peninsula and a stop in one of the ways to Compostela. It's equidistant between the most northern points of peninsular geography: capes of Creus and Finisterre. It's an 'Omphalos', a center of the world. According to tradition, saint James, riding his horse, jumped from the top of one of the canyon's headlands. Depending on the version, his sword fell down and stuck in the place where the temple was built. The other version tells that were horses' hoofs which marked the spot.
The order celebrated initiation rites inside, such as might be deduced from the symbols on the stone in the whole church. Among others: the wolf (initiatic grade in the medieval stone masonry guilds and a light symbol in the Greek mythology), Saint Bartholomew holding his skin (in reference to the serpent which sloughs off the skin as a knowledge metaphore), the inverted pentacles created with hearts (sufist and alquemic references brought from Holy Land), the Chrismon of the 'Thousand ways of Saint James', the goose's leg (symbol of the guild 'Sons of Master Jacques') or the octopus (astrologically associated to summer solstice).
