Cuenta una leyenda guanche que el dios Guayota, el maligno, secuestró a Magec, el dios del Sol, y lo encerró en su morada, un volcán conocido como 'Echeyde'. La isla de Tenerife se sumió en la oscuridad. Los habitantes invocaron al dios supremo, Achamán, para que les ayudara. Éste derrotó a Guayota, liberó el sol y selló la boca del volcán con el maligno en su interior.
Más allá de la leyenda, el Teide es el monte más alto de España, con 3.718 metros de altura, y de cualquier tierra emergida en el océano Atlántico. También es el tercer volcán más grande del mundo.
Su valor histórico estriba en que es fundamental para entender la cultura guanche tinerfeña, ya que sus alrededores proporcionaban sustento para las poblaciones. Sin embargo, sus principales hitos tienen que ver con sus erupciones. De las registradas, cabe destacar aquella que vio Cristóbal Colón durante su paso por el sur de la isla en dirección a la indias, que desembocaría en el descubrimiento de América.
El siglo XVIII fue el más activo para la zona, con cuatro erupciones. La más grave fue la de Trevejo en 1706, que arrasó el pueblo de Garachico. La más curiosa fue la del Pico Viejo, otro volcán de este espacio natural,en 1798. Este fenómeno modeló las conocidas como 'Narices del Teide', cráteres parásitos del punto eruptivo principal, ya que el magma tenía problemas para salir.
El Parque Nacional del Teide está considerado como uno de los 12 tesoros de España y es patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco desde 2007.

There is a Guanche legend about the god Guayota, the Evil one, kidnapped Magec, the god of the Sun, and enclosed him in his dwelling, a volcano known as 'Echeyde'. The island of Tenerife was plunged into darkness. The population summoned the main god, Achaman, to help them. He defeated Guayota, freed the sun and sealed the mouth of the volcano with the evil god inside.
Beyond the legends, Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and in the Atlantic Ocean, 3,718 meters high. It's the third biggest volcano in the world.
Its historical value is based on its influence over the Guanche culture of Tenerife, because its surrounding area provided sustenance for the population. Nevertheless, its main landmarks are related with the eruptions. It should be noted that one which was seen by Cristopher Columbus when he was travelling to Asia, which would lead to the discovery of the New World.
XVIII century was the most active for the area with four eruptions. The most important was at the Trevejo one in 1706, which destroyed the village of Garachico. Whereas, the most curious was in 1798 at Pico Viejo, another volcano in that countryside. This phenomenon created the 'Noses of the Teide', parasitic craters of the main eruptive point, inasmuch as the magma had problems existing.
Teide National Park is considered one of the twelve Spanish treasures and is a Humanity Heritage since 2007.
