The count John Hunyadi was known as one of the most important generals in medieval Europe. He took part in the Italian conflicts and the Hussite wars. He defeated Ottoman Turks on several occasions and was the hero in the siege of Belgrade against Mehmet the conqueror. His son was the thirty-fifth  king of Hungary.

He is a character of a lot of Center European legends and traditional tales. Nevertheless, his greatest contribution to the literature is, together with Roger de Flor, inspired the character of Tirant lo Blanch, the leading role of the homonymous chivalric novel, written by Joanot Martorell. This is for many people the best book written in Valencian ever.
