(Actualización: investigadores de varias universidades han demostrado que el arte ruprestre más antiguo del mundo hallado hasta hoy es de las cuevas de Maros, en la isla de Sulawesi -Indonesia-)

Un estudio publicado en la revista 'Science' en junio de 2012 defiende que el arte figurativo nació en España. El equipo investigador, sufragado por la Universidad de Bristol, realizó nuevas dataciones mediante un método que mide los isótopos de uranio en las calcitas.

Los resultados mostraron que los discos rojos y las huellas de manos de la cueva de El Castillo (Cantabria) tienen un mínimo de 40.800 años de antigüedad; las figuras claviformes de las cuevas de Altamira (Cantabria), 35.600; y las figuras humanas de la cueva de Tito Bustillo (Asturias), entre 35.000 y 29.600 años. Meses después, otra investigación señaló que la cueva de Nerja, en Málaga, posee los restos artísticos más antiguos conocidos con 42.000 años de antigüedad.

Los especialistas debaten si los neandertales fueron capaces de hacer estas obras de arte. No sería extraño. Decoraban su cuerpo con ocre, tenían adornos y tallaban piezas. El arte figurativo era, simplemente, el siguiente paso lógico en su evolución.

A study published in the 'Science' magazine on June 2012 stands up for the figurative art was born in Spain. The researching team, defrayed by Bristol University, made new dating with a method that measures uranium isotopes in calcite.

Results showed that red discs and handprints in the cave of El Castillo (Cantabria) are at least 40.800 years old; the claviform-like symbols of the cave of Altamira (Cantabria), 35.600; and the human figures of the cave of Tito Bustillo (Asturias), between 35.000 and 29.600 years. Several months later, another research noted that the cave of Nerja with an age of 42.000 years, in Málaga, has the oldest artistic remains known.

Experts discuss if Neanderthal were able to make these work of arts. It wouldn't be unusual. They painted their bodies with ochre, wear ornaments and sculpt objects. Figurative art was, simply, the next logical step in their evolution.
