¿Reconqué? / Reconwhat?

Entrega de Granada. Francisco Pradilla. 1882.

The Capitulation of Granada. Francisco Pradilla. 1882.

All schools taught that the Iberian Christian medieval kingdoms 'reconquered' the peninsular territory to the Muslims. Nevertheless, this statement is far from being correct. It was a propaganda construction to hold those kingdoms' campaigns to get regions taken by Islam. As Ortega y Gasset said: "An eight century reconquest is not a reconquest".

Islam conquered  most of the Iberian peninsula and imposed its power in three decades after its victory against Visigoths in the battle of Guadalete in 711, ending its kingdom over Hispania. After three centuries of political vigour, Muslim presence in the peninsula went into decline until its dissapearance in the conquest of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. A branch of historiography defends that Reconquista exists from the beginning of the Muslim invasion because of the mythic Asturian king Pelagius defeated Muslims in Covadonga in 722. Nevertheless, another experts discuss the historical importance of this fact and shows that a large portion of Hispano Visigothic population adjusted to the new centralized government that was set up by consecutive Islamic government.

Then, where does the idea come? King Liuvigild conquered territories from Cantabria, Bastetania, Malaga, Orense (Aragense country), Sabaria, Suevi, Spanish Byzantium, Cordoba and Orospeda, before the foundation of Reccopolis. The chronicler Juan de Bíclaro alluded these victories in 578 as a return to the Visigothic possession, despite they were a conquest abroad. Visigoths considered Hispania as a geographic unit whose sovereign belonged themselves. Hispanic Roman landowners had transfered their loyalty to these Germanic people 50 years ago, in the person of king Ataulf, first, and king Eric, in a greater extent. They understood that Roman Imperial power was only maintained with the Visigothic support, that was acting as a federated people in Hispania and Gaul. Thus, the Hispanic Gothic monarchy recognized itself, politically and legally, as the Roman heir and successor in the peninsula. Suintila declared himself king of the Spanias 60 years after because of the peninsular unification after the expulsion of the Byzantine army. This title was used equally by Christian and Islamic Iberian governors with the intention of imposing their supremacy on the rest, as an Hispanic emperor. In fact, it was used legally until the unification of the Spanish State by Philip V by Nueva Planta decrees, published in the beginning of XVII century.

Governors of the different Christian states, descendants of the Asturian kingdom and the Frank Marca Hispanica, considered themselves often as legal and blood heirs of the Goths, as a lawful mechanism to justify their expansionist politics against the Muslim peninsular south. That is why they talked about reconquest, despite they captured territories where the social majority were as Spaniard as them. Late-medieval and Modern Christian kings benefited from maintain this concept to reinforce several aspects of their religious politics and their unification projects.

La provincia Transduriana / The Transdurian province

Bierzo edict. Museum of León.

The Roman Hispania had a military district. During the Cantabrian Wars, the problem didn't be solved. North of river Duero, Romans split the Asturian, Galaecian and Cantabrian regions off and created the Transdurian province, as reflected in the Bronze of Bembibre, found in El Bierzo.

There is a debate about if it was a real province or not. The defenders of the theory claim that Transdurian was under the military control of Lucius Sestius Quirinalis Albinianus. The measure should not be effective because in 19 bC, after the battle of mount Medulius, Rome had to send the general Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa to eradicate the uprising devastating the region. Probably, the province had dissapeared when Augustus visited these lands fo the second time, between 15 bC and 13 bC.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to the last studies, Neanderthal men became extinct because they weren't able to compete for resources with the 'Homo Sapiens'. Nevertheless, the debate now centers on where they disappeared. It was believed till 2012 that the last Neanderthal communities lived in the South of the Iberian Peninsula 33.000 years ago. Some theorists defended that they escaped from the Würm glaciation cold which affected to the rest of Europe.

Following studies claim that Neanderthal died out in the Cantabrian Mountains, in the North of the country. The evidence is in a cave called El Esquilleu. According to the ultrafiltration technique, its age might be close to 23.000 years old.

The archeological excavation revealed, in the oldest site stratus (50.000 years old), grass bunks and well-sculpted stone tools made with good and far brought raw material. The most modern one, the flint tools were made in a hurry, little crafted and with bad raw materials. They worked as fast as possible because there was a land exploitation focused on survive. Neanderthal men suffered economic 'stress' because the hunting ground was overexploited. Little by little, they were pushed away to unlivable regions, where hunted goats and chamoises, until the extinction. That is, they would have been víctimas of a Sapiens 'hostile takeover'.

La capilla sixtina del arte rupestre / The Sixtine Chapel of the cave art

The cave of Altamira, located in Cantabria, is considered the Sixtine Chapel of the cave art. Its paintings were made during 22.000 years, between the periods of Magdalenian, Solutrean and Gravettian. Polychromatic compositions, etchings and antropomorphic and zoomorphic figures in black, red and ochre scattered on many cavities.

It was discovered in 1868 by a hunter who found the entrance while he was trying to free his dog, trapped in a crack. Nobody highlighted it until María, an 8 years old girl, the daughter of the paleontology's amateur Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, noticed the oxes painted in the cave´s vault. And deers, ponies, swans, ibexes.

The discovery questioned the basis of the prehistoric investigation up to then. Scholars suggested that Sautuola had painted the cave. The director of the Spanish institution Calcografía Nacional even claimed that it was not cave art but "only the expression of an average disciple of the modern art school". Altamira was recognised when figures from the academic world as Henri Breuil, Émile Cartailhac or Hugo Obermaier demonstrated the opposite, after comparing the paintings with similar ones found in south France.

Altamira's artists engraved the stone with very sharp silex burins, and painted the cave with vegetal coal, iron oxid and ochre. They marked the outlines and tried to find some perspectives taking advantage of the natural bulkinesses of the rocks. They lighted up themselves with bones, using the marrow as combustible.

Experts still discuss the painting's meaning. Religious or fertility rites, hunting totems, sympathetic magic or a symbolic stories about territorial wars are some of the assumptions suggested. The important thing is Altamira is a real graphic novel of prehistoric life of the French-Cantabric region.

Note: The cave is closed to prevent its deterioration, but the Spanish National Archeological Museum and the Museum of Santillana del Mar have the best natural size replicas to know this treasure.

El círculo cántabro / The Cantabrian circle

Iberic military strategies were copied by Roman armies systematically to improve its war machine.

They adapted the Hispanic 'falcata' and adopted the Cantabrian circle (also named 'catabricus circulus') for the light cavalry after Cantabrian wars. It was very similar to the Parthian shot.

Mounted javelin throwers would form two single-file semicircle. When they face the enemy, they would let their missile fly. Then they covered themselves with the shields and fell back through the sides.

The 'cantabricus circulus' continued to be effective well into the Middle Ages because of its usefulness against archers and heavy infantry.

El ángel caído / The fallen angel

Estatua del ángel caído. Ricardo Bellver. Parque del Retiro. Madrid.

Statue of the fallen angel. Ricardo Bellver. Retiro Park. Madrid

Madrid has the oldest sculpture dedicated to the fallen angel. It was created by Ricardo Bellver in 1877, based on the John Milton's 'Paradise lost'. It represents the instant when the evil put in Lucifer's body. The Spanish Estate bought it and sent it to Paris because of the Universal Exposition of 1878 and, in 1885, it was installed in Retiro Park, in the place where was located the Chinese porcelain factory, destroyed by the Wellington's army during the Spanish Independence War, to avoid the competition with the English industry.

The figure, strongly influenced by the 'Laocoön and his sons' of Agesander, Athenodoros and Polidorus, is placed at a topographic altitude of 666 meters above sea level. This situation, in spite of its logic taking into account that Madrid's average height is 655 meters, has given rise to many esoteric theories and, also, the brilliant film 'The day of the beast', directed by Álex de la Iglesia.

It's not the only monument dedicated to the fallen angel in the world. Turin has the 'Monument to the Traforus of the Frejus', New York has two monuments (in the Rockefeller Center and in the Brooklyn Museum) and in Comillas' graveyard (Cantabria).

El arte nació en España // Art was born in Spain

No sería extraño.

Cave paintings in Nerja (Málaga). Fundación Cueva de Nerja.

(Update: investigators of many universities have demonstrated that the worldwide oldest cave-painting ever found is in the cave of Maros, in Sulawesi island -Indonesia-)

A study published in the 'Science' magazine on June 2012 stands up for the figurative art was born in Spain. The researching team, defrayed by Bristol University, made new dating with a method that measures uranium isotopes in calcite.

Results showed that red discs and handprints in the cave of El Castillo (Cantabria) are at least 40.800 years old; the claviform-like symbols of the cave of Altamira (Cantabria), 35.600; and the human figures of the cave of Tito Bustillo (Asturias), between 35.000 and 29.600 years. Several months later, another research noted that the cave of Nerja with an age of 42.000 years, in Málaga, has the oldest artistic remains known.

Experts discuss if Neanderthal were able to make these work of arts. It wouldn't be unusual. They painted their bodies with ochre, wear ornaments and sculpt objects. Figurative art was, simply, the next logical step in their evolution.
