Una magnífica investigación de los profesores universitarios Ignacio Ruiz Rodríguez y Fernando Bermejo Batanero han rescatado para la historia la que, probablemente, sea la primera condena por violencia de género. Francisca de Pedraza, huérfana de padre y madre desde muy joven, fue educada en un convento de monjas complutenses en el siglo XVII. Se casó con 15 ó 16 años con Jerónimo de Jaras. Desde el principio, la sometió a palizas, violaciones y otras vejaciones.
Tras años de malos tratos y con dos hijos a su cargo, decidió acudir a la justicia ordinaria para denunciar su caso. Era una mujer contra el mundo y la historia. Le derivaron a la justicia eclesiástica, pues al ser asuntos matrimoniales tenían que ver con lo sagrado. Los religiosos documentaron el estado de su cuerpo, lleno de heridas. Condenaron al marido a ser "bueno y honesto" y a que tratara a la demandante "con mucho amor". Eso sí, la obligaban a convivir con el maltratador, que la violó y la dio tal paliza que la dejó al borde de la muerte.
Francisca no cejó en su empeño y solicitó una cédula al nuncio del Papa en España para llevar su caso a la jurisdicción universitaria de Alcalá de Henares. La corte de justicia de la institución acogió su caso. El presidente del tribunal, el ilustre jurista Álvaro de Ayala, sentenció en 1624 mediante una cédula la formalización del divorcio legal, la devolución de la dote y una orden de alejamiento contra Jerónimo de Jaras, sus parientes y cualquier otra persona que pudiera agredir a su exesposa. El condenado presentó un recurso al entender que la mujer debía estar a su lado pero la corte lo archivó.
Los autores del libro han solicitado al Ayuntamiento alcalaíno que una calle lleve el nombre de Francisca de Pedraza.

An excellent investigation of the university teachers Ignacio Ruiz Rodríguez and Fernando Bermejo Batanero has recovered for history, probably, the first conviction for gender violence. Francisca de Pedraza, orphaned very young, was educated in a Complutense convent in XVII century. She was married with Jerónimo de Jaras whe she was 15 or 16 years old. From the beginning, he bullied them with beatings, rapes, humiliations and another vexations.
After years of ill-treatment and with two children to support, she decided to report her case, seeking for justice. She was a woman against the world and the history. She was referred to ecclesiastic justice because matrimonial matters were associated with the sacred. Priests documented her body's state, full of wounds. Her husband was sentenced to be "good and honest" and to treat the complainant "with lots of love". However, they forced them to live with her abuser. Inmediately, he raped and beat her savagely almost to death.
Francisca didn't give up on her efforts and asked for a permission from Pope's nuncio in Spain to take her case to the University of Alcalá de Henares. The institution court accepted. The president of the tribunal, distinguished jurist Álvaro de Ayala, sentenced in 1624 by means of a document the formalisation of the legal divorce, the dowry's reimbursement and a restraining order againts Jerónimo de Jaras, his relatives and any other person who might attack his ex wife. The condemned man appealed on the basis of the woman must stand at his side but the court closed the case.
The book's authors have requested to Alcalá de Henares City Council to name a public place in honour of Francisca de Pedraza.
